Why I did it, and why you should too.

9 years ago, I was was 10 years old at the time, I signed up on Facebook to connect with family and friends.

Back then, Facebook did not have so many features and was focused on user content and instant messaging (that was still a “new” and exciting feature).

However, year after year, Facebook became such a shitty platform. Facebook does not care about me connecting with friends, it just want me to consume content as much as possible on their platform - while generating ad revenue.

Facebook collects a huge amount of data about its users, but does such a shitty job at handling it.

This has been the case for quite some time now.

This morning the New York Times revealed yet another scandal: Facebook shared private user data with other big corporations without the user’s consent, of course.

I have been using Facebook less and less. The people that matter to me or that I matter too know how to contact me through other means. After all, there is so much more to the Internet than Facebook.

I had no excuse anymore. It’s been 3 years since I said to myself that I’d delete Facebook soon.

I saws DHH’s tweets this morning and he was pissed at Facebook and at people that kept using it.

That was the stuff I needed to read.

So tonight, I came home, I downloaded my Facebook archive, deleted most of my Facebook content and messages, and proceeded to delete my account.

Goodbye, Facebook, and fuck you.
